Conjunctions are also known as linking words (or linkers), and for a very good reason: they connect ideas. <\/span>In the most basic of sense and broadly-speaking, conjunctions can be split into several categories, but will not be mutually exclusive to only one category.<\/span><\/p>\n

Conjunctions of idea<\/b><\/h1>\n

As they sound, conjunctions of idea link ideas. They can be categorized generally as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
To add an idea<\/span><\/td>\nTo show contrast<\/span><\/td>\nTo give the reason<\/span><\/td>\nTo give the result<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Typically \u2018<\/span>and<\/span><\/i>\u2019<\/span><\/td>\nTypically \u2018<\/span>but<\/span><\/i>\u2019<\/span><\/td>\nTypically \u2018<\/span>because<\/span><\/i>\u2019<\/span><\/td>\nTypically \u2018<\/span>so<\/span><\/i>\u2019<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Also, as well, too, in addition, furthermore, moreover<\/span><\/i><\/td>\nHowever, despite, in spite of, on the other hand, although, even though, though, in contrast, while, whereas<\/span><\/i><\/td>\nAs, due to, for this reason, since<\/span><\/i><\/td>\nTherefore, as a result, so that, in order to<\/span><\/i><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Conjunctions of time<\/b><\/h1>\n

Once again as their name suggests, these conjunctions reveal the time relationship between actions. Typical examples include before, after, then, while, since, as soon as, until etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

Note how some conjunctions can represent idea or time (while and since are the obvious examples), but the context will usually reveal which.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/p>

I came here <\/span>since<\/span><\/i> I don\u2019t like the other restaurant. (idea) <\/span><\/p>\n

I have been here <\/span>since <\/span><\/i>2pm. (time)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Correlative conjunctions<\/b><\/h1>\n

These conjunctions consist of pairs that must not be adapted. Examples:<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n

I will have <\/span>either<\/span><\/i> the pizza <\/span>or<\/span><\/i> the pasta.<\/span><\/p>\n

I like <\/span>neither <\/span><\/i>milk <\/span>nor <\/span><\/i>cheese.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Coordinating conjunctions<\/b><\/h1>\n

Many of the conjunctions listed above are coordinating conjunctions, meaning that they link words or clauses with the same value. Examples:<\/span><\/p>\n

I ate soup <\/span>and<\/span><\/i> a sandwich.<\/span><\/p>\n

I went to see that movie <\/span>but<\/span><\/i> I didn\u2019t like it.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In these types of conjunctions, the linking word stays in the middle.<\/span><\/p>\n

Subordinating conjunctions<\/b><\/h1>\n

Likewise, many of the conjunctions above, along with others including all of the conjunctions that can be used in conditional sentences (<\/span>if, whether, unless, as long, in case<\/span><\/i>), are subordinating conjunctions, meaning that one action or clause is dependent on the other. <\/span><\/p><\/p>\n

I\u2019ll go to the party <\/span>if<\/span><\/i> you go.<\/span><\/p>\n

Richard was fitter than many of his colleagues <\/span>despite<\/span><\/i> being older.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In these cases, the conjunction can also be used at the beginning, as long as the clauses are inverted and a comma is used.<\/span><\/p>\n

If<\/span><\/i> you go, I\u2019ll go.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite<\/span><\/i> being older, Richard was fitter than many of his colleagues.  <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n
