Pronouns replace common or proper nouns in clauses or sentences where repetition is to be avoided (known as antecedents), or something is obvious in context.<\/span><\/p>\n

Types of pronouns<\/h1>\n

Generally speaking, pronouns can be classified as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/colgroup>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Reflexive pronouns<\/td>\nMyself, yourself\/yourselves, himself, herself, ourselves, themselves<\/td>\nSteve fixed the car himself<\/span>.
When we were young, we often looked after ourselves<\/span>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Demonstrative pronouns<\/td>\nThis, these, that, those<\/td>\nThis<\/span> torch is better than that<\/span> one.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Abstract pronouns<\/td>\nIt, there<\/td>\nIt<\/span> is a nice day today.
There<\/span> are millions of people living in Tokyo.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Relative pronouns<\/td>\nWhich, who, whom, where, whose, when, that<\/td>\nShe’s the lady who<\/span> lives next door.
That<\/span>‘s the man whose dog bit me.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Interrogative (question)<\/td>\nWhat, when, why, where, who, whatever<\/td>\nWhat<\/span> happened?
Who<\/span> met you yesterday?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Reciprocal<\/td>\nEach other, one another<\/td>\nJoanna and Sam like each other<\/span>.
Yes, I think they love one another.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Indefinite<\/td>\nAll, another, any, anybody, anyone, anything, both, each, either, enough, everybody, everyone, everything, few, little, more, most, much, neither, nobody, no one, none, nothing, one, other, others, no one, nothing, some, somebody, someone, something, such<\/td>\nThere was nobody<\/span> there.
That is not something<\/span> I would enjoy doing.

Common problems<\/h1>\n

Pronouns should be used logically and always with the question \u2018is it obvious to the listener\/reader?\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Who and whom are commonly misused. Simply, who is a subject pronoun and whom is an object pronoun, but confusion reigns because the latter replaces the former if it is preceding the verb. Example:<\/span><\/p>\n

To whom did you speak?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

As it is you (the subject) that spoke, whom is correctly used here as an object pronoun, and it is before the verb.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n

Another issue is the format of the verb after many indefinite pronouns. Example:<\/span><\/p>\n

Nobody are her.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Although nobody suggests plural, body is singular and should always be used with the third person singular. Therefore, nobody is waiting.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n \n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
