Often used to express the relationship between words, prepositions can in fact be split into definable categories to assist in their understanding and use.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1>Prepositions of time<\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prepositions of time may not be logical, but they can be learnt by heart. Examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"height: 253px;\" width=\"920\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h6><strong>In<\/strong><\/h6>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<h6><strong>At<\/strong><\/h6>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<h6><strong>On<\/strong><\/h6>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Months eg in January<\/span>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Years eg in 2018<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seasons eg in summer<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parts of the day eg in the morning<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Times eg at 2 o\u2019clock<\/span>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Holidays eg at Christmas<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the weekend<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At night<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Days eg on Saturday<\/span>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h1>Prepositions of place or movement<\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These prepositions give information regarding the position of something in relation to something else. These prepositions include <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">above, across, at, away, behind, below, beside, between, by, down, in, in front of, into, near, next to, on, onto, through, towards, under, up. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The painting is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the wall <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the living room.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The man walked <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the bridge and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">through<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the park.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h1>Dependent prepositions<\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many verbs, nouns and adjectives require a preposition to accompany them, and these are called dependent prepositions. Once again they are often not logical, but can be learned by heart. Examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I enjoy <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">listening to<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I enjoy learning lyrics <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by heart.<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Dad is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">good at<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> golf.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With these types of prepositions, it is normal and necessary for them to be included in any question or sentence containing its partner word, even if the prepositions feature at the end of that question or sentence. Examples: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are you listening to?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are not many sports that my Dad isn\u2019t good at.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h1>Phrasal Verbs<\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dependent prepositions should not be confused with phrasal verbs, which are a verb and preposition combination used to create a specific meaning. It is also important to recognise the reason for the preposition included. Examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wait <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> me. (dependent preposition)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am not here to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wait on <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you. (phrasal verb, meaning to offer a waiter service)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You often must wait <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> summer.
